Wake, 2021
23.625" x 86" x 86", wood-fired stoneware with perlite.
Wake was created during a state of mourning, as a way to activate the body during a profound moment of grief. The title references the period after a person’s death; the disruption of a peaceful surface after a massive presence has passed; or the simple act of waking every morning to not finding one’s Beloved in one’s arms.
Undulating like choppy waters, the top contour acts as a visual metaphor to the ups and downs of the grieving process, while the coming together of the segments creates a circle, underscoring the understanding that life and death are neither the beginning nor the end, but relationships in perpetuity.
