Holding Space, 2021
12" x 69" x 69", wood-fired stoneware with perlite.
Constructed and fired while in residency in Alaska, Holding Space is a simulacrum of the artist’s experience of having had emotional space “held” for her over a profound period of grief. This concept was executed in the firing of the work by pairing segments as parenthesis around the work of her fellow residents, thereby “holding space” for them in the kiln. Ultimately the segments come together to create a final holding space—a sacred circle—for either meditative thought or physical containment.
